Yesterday, the famous late term abortion doctor, George Tiller was gunned down while serving as an usher at his church in Wichita, KS. The story appears here.
I am absolutely against any form of violence against abortion. Murder is never acceptable. Princeton University defines murder as the, “Unlawful premeditated killing of a human being by a human being.” This was not self defense. This was not war. This was a cold, calculated, premeditated murder. I believe it is our responsibility to protest peacefully, to call or write our congressional leaders, and our President. BUT it is not acceptable to attack abortionists, bomb their clinics, or in any way assault abortion doctors.
President Obama released a statement on the shooting,”I am shocked and outraged by the murder of Dr. George Tiller as he attended church services this morning. However profound our differences as Americans over difficult issues such as abortion, they cannot be resolved by heinous acts of violence.”
An even more heinous act is President Obama condemning the murder of Tiller while the President supports the murder of nearly 4000 unborn children each day. The murder of one man is a , ” . . . heinous act of violence” but the intentional homicide of unborn children is okay. A pretty hypocritical statement. I do agree that the abortion issue should not be settled with violence, but it is not a difficult issue.
The Bible is very clear about this issue. Exodus 20:13 says, “You shall not murder.” The commandment is repeated in the New Testament in Mark 10:19: “You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder . . .'”
But Pastor Ian, you may argue, what is growing in a womb isn’t a baby, it’s a glob of tissue. When does the magical transition to human being take place? Is it at three months? Six months? Or is it when the baby travels down the birth canal? What about viability? Psalm 139:13-14 says,“For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” It happens at conception. Isaiah 49:1 says, “Listen to Me, O islands, And pay attention, you peoples from afar. The LORD called Me from the womb; From the body of My mother He named Me.” How can someone be called that is not a human being?
Are you pro-life? Pro-choice? Most Christians would say they’re pro-life, but are they really? Patrick Eades, the Executive Director of the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Coastal Georgia says we are, “Pro-life by conviction and pro-choice by default.” That is a very convicting statement. In other words, we say, “Abortion is wrong,” yet we do nothing to stop it. We don’t take part in peaceful demonstrations, we don’t pray that Roe vs. Wade is overturned, we don’t tell our politicians to introduce legislation against abortion, we don’t financially support organizations that fight against abortion, we simply do nothing. Pro choice by default.
Why don’t you take a stand against abortion? The time is now.
